St Pauli looking to expand the Millerntor

FC St. Pauli’s board is weighing options for the future of its stadium, from expanding the current Millerntor-Stadion to

building a brand-new venue for up to 50,000 fans.

The debate was partly sparked by Hamburg’s possible Olympic bid, which includes proposals to use the Millerntor for hockey, though ideas about its future - like those on the fan blog Millernton’s “Think big – Das Millerntor im Jahr 2050” - have been around for a while.

Suggestions go beyond more seats, envisioning facilities for other sports, a multi-purpose hall, and sustainable designs. Moving the stadium is also being discussed. AG Stadion, formed at the 2023 fan congress, has presented its own unpublished concepts to club officials, with managing director Wilken Engelbracht noting the ground is already too small for demand. With over 52,000 members in 30 disciplines, president Oke Göttlich says the club is feeling the strain. Finding the right solution will take time, but the goal is to match facilities with growing interest, possibly starting by closing the stadium’s open corners to boost capacity.
