TSV 1860 München could expand stadium to 25,000 seats

This is good news for TSV 1860 München supporters, many of whom have long considered the stadium on Grünwalder Straße - variously known as Grünwalder Stadion, Auf Geisings Höhen (on Geising Heights) Sechzgerstadion (60's stadium) or simply Das Sechzger - as their spiritual home.

Munich has given TSV 1860 and its professional football division a few months to prepare a new feasibility study to see if the arena can be expanded beyond earlier plans. The aim is a Bundesliga-ready stadium with 25,000 seats, meeting Germany’s top-tier standards. “This is essentially a commitment to preserve the stadium and the 60ers in Giesing,” said Beppo Brem, the Green Party’s sports policy spokesperson. The city had waited years for such clarity, while the club avoided giving firm answers, with some even dreaming of a brand-new 50,000-seat arena in Riem.

Right now, Grünwalder Stadion holds 15,000 spectators. A previous city study found expansion possible up to 18,105 seats, with a preliminary permit issued in 2020. Now, under newly elected president Gernot Mang, the club can explore the chance of going bigger.

Time is tight. City official Florian Kraus stressed the urgent need for renovation, with a decision due by the end of 2026 on whether to stick to maintenance or opt for a major expansion. Delays aren’t an option, as construction will take at least five to six years.

During the works, the stadium will be out of action, meaning TSV 1860 would have to play at the Olympiastadion. The club will weigh this move carefully. One thing’s for sure – next year, the future of Grünwalder Stadion will spark heated debate among fans and media in Munich.
