Werder Bremen cling on to their Bundesliga place...for now!

Needing a win against 1. FC Köln and hoping that Fortuna Düsseldorf would drop points at Union Berlin, with a negative goal difference to overcome too, Werder Bremen had a dream Saturday after on the final day of the Bundesliga season. With their opponents already figuratively “on the beach”, Werder smashed six past Köln’s keeper Tiimo Horn to run out comfortable winners. Meanwhile Düsseldorf lost 3-0 at Union and dropped into 17th place in the table, consigning them to playing next season in Bundesliga 2. Meanwhile Bremen live to fight another day. They finish the season in 16th place, so will play in the two legged Relegation playoff game against whoever finishes 3rd in the second tier. Victory in this tie and they will be sta ying in the Bundesliga, extending their 40 year streak. Currently their opponents are scheduled to be 1. FC Heidenheim, however there is the potential for it to be against their local rivals Hamburg, setting up a very spicy Nordderby.
